Notes: Gilbert's family had just moved to Lonoke County a couple of years before and Mary told me that she and Gilbert met at a barn dance. They got married in Arkansas, moved to Dallas, Texas by the end of 1938, Gilbert worked several jobs, including driving truck and as a clerk at a Cabell's store. The couple moved back to Arkansas about 1942 with their daughter Gloria. Gilbert worked in the rice fields and learned to repair the equipment and keep it going during wartime. After WWII they tried farming but that did not work. So Gilbert learned to be a mechanic and then learned diesel mechanicing which is what he did the rest of his life. In 1951 they moved back to Dallas. In 1956 they divorced and Gilbert married Sterling Edwards. Gilbert was in the 7th cavalry and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas until he received an injury from a horse. This was about 1931, when he was quite young. |
